CASE STUDY : M621 Joint Replacement Project (J5-J7)

The M621 opened in 1972 and remains an important link between the M62 and the M1 in Yorkshire, just south of Leeds.

The M621 is unusual because it forms a loop, passing through Leeds city centre, past the home of Leeds United Football Club at Elland Road and then coming out at the other side.

The maintenance of this heavily trafficked section of motorway is the responsibility of Highways England and sits in Area 12 where A-one+, a joint venture between Costain, Colas and Jacobs, has the maintenance framework contract.

A key project within the maintenance programme in early 2021 was the replacement of a number of bridge expansion joints between Hunslet and Stourton (J5–J7).

Metrail Construction Ltd, as one of the UK’s leading road infrastructure repair specialists, was selected by A-one+ to carry out this critical maintenance work.
